A trip to see Machu Picchu is calling my name the loudest. There’s an ethereal, almost mythical quality to it that has captivated me for years. It’s not just about checking a Wonder of the World off my list; it’s about the craving to stand in a place that so perfectly merges staggering natural beauty with an incredible, lingering sense of history and mystery. The images alone are surreal, but I can only imagine the pervasive sense of calm and awe that comes from actually walking among those ancient stones.
This one-day, all-out trip is the ultimate excursion for anyone like me who is short on time but desperate to experience the magic. I can’t wait to witness the legendary citadel that has inspired countless stories and even graced the silver screen. The chance to wander through the clouds, explore iconic Inca constructions, and just feel the unique energy of the site is an experience I am truly dying for.
A Glimpse of the Day
The journey kicks off in the impossibly early hours of the morning, a pre-dawn transfer setting the stage for an epic day. We’ll head from Cusco to the train station to board a scenic tourist train that zigzags towards Aguas Calientes. From there, it’s a final, thrilling bus ride up the mountain to the main event: Machu Picchu itself. I’m planning for a solid two and a half hours getting my history fix with an expert guide before heading back down for a well-deserved late lunch and some free time to explore the town. The day winds down with an evening train journey back, followed by a transfer, getting us back to Cusco late at night, full of memories.
Our tour to the enigmatic Machu Picchu begins bright and early with a 3:00 a.m. transfer from our hotel in Cusco, which sits at a lofty 3,399 meters (11,152 feet), to the station in Ollantaytambo at 2,792 meters (9,160 feet). Here, we’ll board our chosen train—be it the EXPEDITION, VISTADOME, or INCA RAIL—for the stunning journey to Aguas Calientes, the town nestled at the foot of the great mountain.
Upon arrival, our guide will be there to meet us and get us onto the bus that makes the final ascent to the entrance of the Machu Picchu Citadel, perched at an incredible 2,430 meters (7,972 feet). This is where the real adventure begins: a guided tour of approximately two hours, diving into the history and secrets of this spectacular site. After we’ve soaked it all in, we’ll take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes, located at 2,040 meters (6,693 feet), where a delicious à la carte lunch awaits. The rest of the afternoon is free—perfect for wandering through the town’s market or perhaps even taking a dip in the local hot springs.
At 6:00 p.m., it’s time to board the return train to Ollantaytambo. Our transport will be waiting to take us on the final leg of the journey back to Cusco, wrapping up an absolutely unforgettable day.
