DAY 1:

Cusco to Trailhead to Rainbow Mountain Hike and Return to Cusco

The day begins with a pickup between 4:00 and 4:30 am from your hotel Airbnb or hostel in Cusco (Altitude: 11,152 feet / 3,400 meters). The drive to the trailhead will take about 2½ hours arriving around 7 am. At the trailhead our chef will prepare breakfast including coffee hot chocolate teas bread fruit salad eggs and hot drinks. The weather in Cusco is typically cold especially in the early morning at the trailhead so wearing a warm jacket scarf hat and gloves is recommended.

Following breakfast the hike to the Rainbow Mountain range will take approximately 2 hours uphill. Depending on your pace and acclimatization it could take between 1½ and 2¾ hours. There will be short breaks during the ascent where the guide will provide information about the mountains and the local geography. You might also see local wildlife such as llamas and alpacas.

The hiking trail is relatively wide which can be helpful for those with vertigo. The trek is best undertaken during the dry season as the trails are unpaved and can be dusty or slippery if wet during the rainy season. Waterproof hiking shoes and trekking poles are advisable. This location has gained popularity on platforms like Instagram according to CNBC.

Upon reaching the summit of Rainbow Mountain around 9-10:00 am you will have about one hour to take in the panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains including Ausangate the highest glacial mountain in the Cusco region (Altitude: 20,944 feet / 6,384 meters) which is among the tallest peaks in Peru.

After allowing time for photographs your guide will explain the reasons behind the mountain’s colors and share details about Incan history. Following this there will be a final opportunity for photos before the descent begins. The return route differs from the ascent. Instead of retracing the steps the group will hike to a viewpoint overlooking the Red Valley before continuing the descent.

Many hikers consider the Red Valley to be even more impressive than Rainbow Mountain. The hike down to the end of the trail near the starting point will take approximately 2½ hours mostly downhill. Here a freshly prepared meal by the chef will be served including cold drinks appetizers soup and a main course.

After lunch the return drive to Cusco will take another 2½ hours with an estimated arrival time at your hotel around 4:30 – 5:30 pm.
