Best Food for the Cusco Treks

Delicious and Nutritious Meals on Your Trek with Machupicchu Elevation

At Machupicchu Elevation, we believe that outstanding food is a vital part of an unforgettable trekking experience. Our team of professional chefs is dedicated to providing you with fresh, delicious, and healthy meals throughout your journey, ensuring you have the energy needed to conquer the trail.

Our Food Philosophy

You might be surprised at the quality of meals prepared in a small tent with limited equipment. Our chefs are not only professionally trained but also specialize in high-altitude cooking. They prepare everything from scratch using fresh ingredients sourced from local markets in Cusco. We pride ourselves on never using canned or dehydrated food. All ingredients and equipment are carried by our dedicated porters, ensuring a fresh meal is ready for you at every stop.

We offer five meals a day to keep you well-fueled: a hearty breakfast, a midday snack, a substantial lunch, a social happy hour with tea and snacks, and a final, delicious dinner. You’ll be amazed at the variety and quality of the food, which often includes a buffet-style dinner that goes far beyond typical trekking fare.

Sample Menu

  • Breakfast: Omelets, pancakes, scrambled eggs, porridge, and fresh fruit.
  • Snack: Cookies, fruit, and chocolate to keep your energy up between meals.
  • Lunch: A variety of dishes like corn soup, chicken and rice, ceviche, and fresh salads.
  • Happy Hour: Popcorn, fried wontons, and hot beverages.
  • Dinner: Stuffed chicken, vegetable tortillas, spaghetti, and pizza.

Dietary Accommodations

We can accommodate a wide range of dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, and food allergies. Simply inform us of your specific requirements when you book your tour. If you have a severe allergy, we recommend traveling with a companion who is aware of your condition and knows how to administer any necessary medication.

Water Safety

Staying hydrated is crucial. We provide safe drinking water by boiling tap water from each campsite for 15 minutes. You’ll only need to carry enough water to get you to the first lunch stop, as you can refill your bottles at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Our Kitchen on the Trail

Our chefs and porters work together seamlessly to prepare your meals. Porters transport all the necessary ingredients, gas stoves, and cooking equipment to each camp. The chefs often prepare ingredients in advance so that a warm, delicious meal is ready for you when you arrive after a day of trekking. To maintain the highest standards of hygiene, our chefs undergo annual training on food safety guidelines.

Meal Schedule

Our trek days start early, so meals are served at a consistent schedule to keep you energized.

  • Breakfast: 5:00 – 5:30 AM
  • Snacks: 11:00 AM
  • Lunch: 12:00 – 1:00 PM
