Machu Picchu Elevation

Machu Picchu sits at 7,972 feet (2,430 metres) above sea level, more than 3,000 feet lower than Cusco and lower than nearly every pass on the routes that lead to it.

Machu Picchu stands at 7,972 feet (2,430 metres) above sea level. That is the figure in the UNESCO World Heritage listing and the one Peru’s Ministry of Culture uses, measured at the citadel’s main plaza.

Most people find that number lower than they expected. It is. Machu Picchu sits more than 3,000 feet below Cusco, the city nearly every visitor flies into first, and Cusco is where the altitude actually causes trouble.

Why sources give different numbers

Search for the elevation of Machu Picchu and you will find 7,710 ft, 7,972 ft, 8,038 ft and 8,169 ft, all stated with total confidence. They are not contradicting each other so much as measuring different things.

The citadel is built on a saddle between two peaks, and it has serious internal relief. The agricultural terraces drop well below the plaza. The Guardhouse looks down on the whole site from above it. There is no single point that is Machu Picchu. The site spans roughly 7,900 to 8,200 ft (2,400 to 2,500 m), and 7,972 ft is the official reference for the main ruins. This is a question of which stone you put the instrument on, not of survey error.

Two figures on that list are worth pinning down, because operators routinely get them wrong. Huayna Picchu is 8,835 ft (2,693 m), not the 8,924 ft you will see quoted. That figure belongs to the Sun Gate. And Machu Picchu Mountain at 10,111 ft (3,082 m) is the true high point of the site, standing 2,139 ft (652 m) above the ruins everyone photographs.

Machu Picchu is lower than Cusco. By a lot.

Cusco sits at 11,152 ft (3,399 m). The citadel sits at 7,972 ft. The difference is 3,179 ft (969 m), and almost every visitor experiences it backwards.

You land in Cusco, which is the highest point of the entire trip on most itineraries, and you go there first, straight from sea level. Then, days later, you descend more than 3,000 feet to visit the place with the reputation for being high. By the time you reach Machu Picchu you are lower than you have been since you arrived in the Andes.

Why 7,972 feet in Peru is not 7,972 feet in Europe

This is the part that catches out European visitors in particular, and it needs splitting into two separate questions that get carelessly merged: what the altitude looks like, and what the altitude does to you. The first difference is enormous. The second is real but modest.

Where the snow starts

Near the equator the permanent snowline sits at roughly 14,760 ft (4,500 m). In the Alps it falls to just under 9,840 ft (3,000 m). That gap of about 4,900 ft is the single most disorienting fact for anyone whose mental picture of “high” was formed in Europe or North America.

Put it side by side. The Jungfraujoch in Switzerland sits at 11,332 ft (3,454 m): permanent ice, a glacier, a research station with a mean annual temperature of 20 °F, and no civilian population at all. Cusco sits at 11,152 ft (3,399 m), a mere 180 feet lower, and holds 500,095 people, traffic lights, a cathedral and an international airport.

Two places at effectively the same altitude. One is a glacier. The other is a city of half a million.

The tree line follows the same rule. In the Alps, forest gives out around 6,560 ft (2,000 m). Near Cusco, Polylepis woodland grows between 13,120 and 17,060 ft (4,000 to 5,200 m), and researchers have documented 43-foot trees standing at 15,256 ft (4,650 m). That is a genuine forest, higher than Dead Woman’s Pass. Human settlement follows it too. La Rinconada in Peru, at up to 16,730 ft (5,100 m), is the highest permanently inhabited town on Earth, above the altitude of almost every summit in the Alps. El Alto, in Bolivia, is a city of over a million people at about 13,620 ft (4,150 m).

The reason is temperature, not oxygen. Tropical high altitude has no real winter. Cusco’s seasonal swing is small; what it has instead is a large daily one, summer every afternoon and winter every night. At 46 degrees north, the same altitude gets a genuine cold season, and a cold season is what builds glaciers.

What the air actually does

There is a second, quieter effect, and it deserves to be stated accurately rather than dramatically.

At a given height, the atmosphere really is thicker near the equator. A very large mass of cold air sits in the equatorial stratosphere and pushes barometric pressure up. John B. West quantified it: at 13,120 ft (4,000 m), pressure is about 475 Torr at 15 degrees latitude against roughly 445 Torr at 60 degrees in winter. In oxygen terms that is worth around 1,600 ft (500 m) of altitude, a real and useful advantage.

But the effect scales with height, and Machu Picchu is not high enough to collect much of it. At 9,840 ft (3,000 m) the tropical atmosphere exceeds the standard atmosphere by only about 10 Torr, worth on the order of 300 ft. At the citadel’s 7,972 ft, less still. Anyone who tells you the Andes are “2,000 feet easier” is quoting a figure from 16,000 or 20,000 ft and applying it where it does not belong.

So the reason Cusco is a city and the Jungfraujoch is a glacier is climate. The reason a Peruvian pass at 15,000 ft is slightly kinder than a Himalayan one is pressure. They are different mechanisms and they should not be blended into a single claim.

Is 7,972 feet high enough to feel?

For most people, at the citadel itself, no. Altitude sickness becomes common above about 8,200 ft (2,500 m), and Machu Picchu sits just below that line. Between 8,200 and 14,110 ft (2,500 to 4,300 m), studies put the incidence at 25 to 43%. Below 8,200 ft it is uncommon.

Cusco is a different proposition entirely. Among 991 travellers surveyed at Cusco airport, 48.5% reported acute mountain sickness and 17.1% reported it as severe. One in five of those affected changed their travel plans. A later cohort found 39% affected within the first 48 hours. This is where the problem lives, more than 3,000 feet above the ruins that get the blame.

Two things are worth knowing, both well supported and both counter-intuitive. Physical fitness does not protect you: fit travellers are affected at comparable rates, and may fare worse because fitness encourages ascending too fast. And the master variable is not where you are from or how strong you are. It is how quickly you got up there. Flying Lima, at 505 ft (154 m), to Cusco, at 11,152 ft, in eighty minutes is the single riskiest thing on a standard itinerary.

What visitors do feel at Machu Picchu is effort. The site is built across a steep saddle and you spend two or three hours on uneven stone stairs. That is breathlessness from exertion at moderate altitude. It is not soroche, and treating it as such leads people to the wrong remedies.

Every route to Machu Picchu, by altitude

Here is the fact that reframes the whole subject: almost every way of reaching Machu Picchu crosses ground far higher than Machu Picchu. The citadel is one of the lowest points on most itineraries, not the highest.

Same destination, wildly different altitude exposure. A traveller on the classic Inca Trail crosses 13,829 ft on day two. A traveller on the short trail never goes above 8,924 ft. Both stand in the same plaza on the last morning and describe the same trip.

Note the odd one out. Some travellers who never walk a step of trail cross Abra Málaga at 14,160 ft (4,316 m) by road, a few hundred feet higher than any Inca Trail trekker reaches. Arriving by vehicle is not the same as arriving low.

The descent from Abra Málaga to Santa María drops about 3,100 m, the largest continuous descent on any route to Machu Picchu, and most of it is done on a bicycle.

The only walking route that never enters the altitude-sickness band at all. Its highest point is the Sun Gate, 220 m below the lowest camp on the classic trail.

The train only ever goes down. From Cusco the whole journey is a descent of about 1,360 m, which is why arriving by rail is the gentlest altitude profile available.

Vertical scale starts at 1,000 m and is identical in every profile, so the routes can be compared directly. Pass elevations with broad agreement across sources are given as published; camp and village elevations come from operator itineraries and should be read as give or take 30 to 50 m. Where sources genuinely disagree, the note under the profile says so.

How to read these profiles

Every profile uses the same vertical scale, so they can be compared directly. The dashed line at 7,972 ft is Machu Picchu itself. The line at 13,123 ft (4,000 m) marks the altitude above which almost nobody is comfortable without acclimatisation. The gold point is the highest place each route reaches.

What the shapes show is that the Inca Trail is not the high one. It just has the famous pass. Salkantay goes 1,362 ft (415 m) higher. The Lares routes go higher still, and the Choquequirao traverse spends days above and below everything else, dropping to 5,020 ft (1,530 m) in the Apurímac canyon before climbing to 15,256 ft (4,650 m). Meanwhile the train, which most visitors take, only ever descends.

A word on the numbers. Pass elevations with broad agreement across sources are given as published. Camp and village elevations come mainly from operator itineraries, which copy each other and contradict each other, and should be read as give or take 100 to 165 ft. Where sources genuinely disagree, and Salkantay Pass appears as 4,600, 4,630 and 4,650 m, the note under the profile says so rather than picking one and pretending.

Two things decide if you are in that half: how high you already live, and how fast you get here. The second one is the one you control.

Almost everyone on Earth lives below the altitude where it starts to matter.

  • The median person on this planet lives just 636 ft (194 m) above sea level.
  • About 80% of humanity lives below 1,640 ft (500 m).
  • Out of eight billion people, only about 81.6 million, or 1 in 100, live above 8,200 ft (2,500 m): the altitude where it starts to affect most people.

So a traveller who struggles in Cusco is not unusual or unfit. They are the default setting for a human being, arriving somewhere most human beings never go.

Everyone goes through Cusco first

This part is not optional, and it is the reason the rest of this section matters. There is no route to Machu Picchu that avoids Cusco’s altitude. Fly in and you land at 11,152 ft. Take the train and you board at Cusco or Ollantaytambo, both reached by road through the same high ground. Walk any of the treks and you go higher still.

So the question is never really “how will Machu Picchu affect me”. It is how will Cusco affect me: a city more than 3,000 feet above the ruins, where you will spend your first nights, jet-lagged, straight off a long flight.

You land at the highest point of the whole trip and come down to the ruins. Those 3,179 ft (969 m) are the reason Cusco decides how the week goes, and the reason the citadel is usually the easy day.

One thing to hold on to before the charts below. Altitude affects everyone differently, and the same elevation can feel completely different from one person to another. Two people can take the same flight on the same morning, sleep in the same hotel at 11,152 ft, and have entirely different nights. Susceptibility is individual and it is not predictable from the outside: not from age, not from weight, not from how much training someone does.

So read what follows as a starting point, not a diagnosis. Where you live is a useful clue, mostly because it predicts whether you have been at altitude recently. What actually decides how you feel is how fast you go up and how high you sleep, and those are the two things you control. 11,152 ft does not mean altitude sickness. It means the risk of it.

North America

The United States is the largest source of visitors and it is not one country in this respect. Nationally, 90.93% of Americans live below 1,640 ft (500 m), and only about 156,000, one in every two thousand, live above 8,200 ft. Those people are not spread evenly.

Two Americas get on the same plane

Every bar is measured against Cusco, 11,152 ft (3,399 m), the altitude every visitor has to reach. The bar is how much of that climb a traveller already lives at; the empty part is what is left to do on arrival.

A family from Miami and a family from Denver can be on the same flight into Cusco and have completely different weeks, and neither of them expects it. Denver arrives with nearly half the climb behind it. Miami arrives with all of it.

84.52% of Canadians live below 1,640 ft (500 m), and not one lives above 8,200 ft (2,500 m). Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, reaches 12,972 ft (3,954 m). Nobody lives up there either.

Owning mountains is not the same as living on them, and that is the theme that repeats on every continent below.

Europe

Europe is the clearest example of that theme. The continent has the Alps, and its population lives at the bottom of them.

Switzerland and Austria make the point sharpest. Switzerland has the highest cable car in Europe and 13,000-foot peaks in every direction, and just 1.82% of Swiss people live above 4,920 ft (1,500 m), with more than half below 1,640 ft. Austria is lower still: 0.7% above 4,920 ft. Being Swiss or Austrian is not acclimatisation. It is a good view.

France, Germany and Italy follow the same shape. Mont Blanc is 15,774 ft (4,808 m) and the Zugspitze 9,718 ft (2,962 m), but 94.86% of the French, 91.04% of Germans and 92.37% of Italians live below 1,640 ft.

Britain and Ireland have no high ground to speak of. 99.99% of Britain lives below 1,640 ft; in Ireland it is 100%. Ben Nevis, the highest point in the British Isles, is 4,413 ft (1,345 m). That is 3,500 feet short of the citadel and nearly 7,000 short of Cusco.

The Low Countries and Scandinavia are the extreme. The whole of the Netherlands peaks at 1,056 ft (322 m), Belgium at 2,277 ft (694 m), Denmark at 561 ft (171 m). In the Netherlands and Denmark, 100% of the population lives below 1,640 ft. Norway and Sweden have mountains and put almost nobody on them: 97.86% and 99.69% below 1,640 ft.

Spain is the mild exception, and Poland and Greece are worth a line each: Poland tops out at Rysy, 8,199 ft (2,499 m), and Greece at Mount Olympus, 9,573 ft (2,918 m). Neither is where Poles or Greeks live.

For European travellers the problem is not geography. It is speed. You leave home, connect in Madrid or Amsterdam, connect again in Lima, and you are standing at 11,152 ft about twenty-four hours after locking your front door. That compression is the risk, far more than which European country you left.

Asia

Japan, South Korea and the Philippines are, in altitude terms, three of the most sea-level populations on the list. Japan has 98.19% of its people below 1,640 ft and exactly 419 Japanese living above 8,200 ft. The Philippines has 431. South Korea has none at all, and nothing in the country reaches even 6,560 ft: Hallasan, the high point, is 6,388 ft (1,947 m).

China is the exception on this entire page. 12.4 million Chinese live above 8,200 ft, which is more than the rest of this page put together. But that is a small slice of an enormous country: 79.3% of China lives below 1,640 ft.

Whether a Chinese visitor struggles in Cusco depends entirely on which China they came from.

Mount Fuji, at 12,388 ft (3,776 m), is higher than Cusco, and it makes no difference. It is climbed in a day and slept off at the bottom. The height a country owns is not the height its people live at, which is the whole point of every chart on this page.

Africa

Egypt is as flat as a populated country gets. 99.98% of Egyptians live below 1,640 ft, because Egypt is the Nile valley and the Nile valley is level.

Morocco is the opposite, and the most under-appreciated case here. The Atlas gives Moroccans real, everyday altitude, and it is the only country on this page outside the Andes and the Himalaya where ordinary towns sit near the altitude of the citadel.

Australia has the cleanest statistic on this page: the highest point on the entire continent is 662 feet lower than Machu Picchu. There is nowhere in Australia as high as the place Australians are flying to.

New Zealand owns Aoraki and sleeps at sea level, which by now will sound familiar.

And at Machu Picchu itself?

Much lower risk, for everyone above, and there is no honest way to put a single number on it. But the reason it is lower is worth understanding, because it is the whole shape of the trip.

Two things work in your favour at the citadel. It sits at 7,972 ft, below the 8,200 ft line where altitude sickness becomes common. And you do not arrive there from home: you arrive from Cusco, 3,179 feet higher, after two or three days of getting used to it. You reach Machu Picchu acclimatised and descending, which is close to the best possible way to meet an altitude.

Cusco is where the trip is decided. The place you came to see is the easy part.

So does living low actually make you ill?

Here is the honest answer, and it is not the one most travel advice gives: living low does not make you ill. Going up fast does.

Where you live matters mostly because it predicts one thing, which is whether you have been at altitude recently. A Bolivian arrives from La Paz already used to it. Someone from Rotterdam does not. But a Dutch traveller who spends two nights in Puno first can arrive better prepared than a Bolivian who has been living in Europe for two months.

Two other findings are worth knowing because they contradict what people assume. Being fit does not protect you: fit travellers are affected at much the same rate, and sometimes worse, because fitness tempts them to go up faster. And age is not the liability it is assumed to be. If anything, older travellers fare slightly better.

One number to be careful with. You may see it claimed that 84% of people flying to altitude get sick. The figure is real and it comes from a 2023 review, but it describes flying to 12,270 ft (3,740 m), higher than Cusco. The figures actually measured in Cusco are lower: 48.5% in a survey of 991 travellers at the airport, and 39% in a later study.

And the advantage does not keep

Adaptation to altitude is not a permanent possession. The extra oxygen-carrying capacity your blood builds at altitude fades back to normal within about two weeks of coming down. A Bolivian who has spent six weeks in Europe has lost nearly all of it.

What does last is what you grew: children raised at altitude develop larger lungs, and that stays with them. It is also worth retiring a common idea, that Andean people carry a gene for altitude. Andeans and Tibetans adapted to the same problem in genuinely different ways, and the famous Tibetan variants are largely absent in the Andes. A person of Peruvian descent raised at sea level arrives as a lowlander, like everyone else on the plane.

What this means for planning

Your passport is a clue, not a verdict. What decides how you feel in Cusco is where you slept for the last few nights and how fast you got up there.

Acclimatise where it is high, not where it is famous. Two or three days in Cusco or, better, the Sacred Valley at around 9,200 ft (2,800 m) before anything demanding. The Sacred Valley option matters more than it sounds: from Cusco airport you can descend to sleep lower, and sleeping altitude is what counts.

Then treat Machu Picchu as the easy day, because at 7,972 ft it genuinely is. The itineraries that go wrong are the ones that land in Cusco from sea level and leave for Rainbow Mountain at 16,522 ft (5,036 m) the following morning.
